Voice and messaging guide

This campaign speaks for Palestinians. It is precise because precision is what makes it hard to dismiss, not because it is neutral.

This guide is how to say it. For what to say, start from the key messages.

Name what is happening

Genocide, as the UN Commission of Inquiry found; an unlawful occupation, as the International Court of Justice held. Say who found it, and when.

Palestinians are people, not a setting

Name who is harmed and what was done to them. Use the source's words: checkpoints, not crossings.

Lead with the company's own conduct

Its contracts, filings and statements, from its profile. Link the evidence so anyone can check it.

Ask for something

Every post should tell someone what to do: ask a supplier, write to a trustee, raise it at work.

Target the function, not the person

Address the company and the role that decides. No personal attacks, no private social media.

Palestinians act

Name the Palestinian journalist, organisation or survivor who documented, filed or testified, and keep their verb. They are not only acted upon.

Words to use

SayNot
Genocide; Israel's assault on Gaza The "Israel-Hamas war" or a "conflict" between equal sides
Gaza's Ministry of Health; Palestinian health authorities "Hamas-run" as a qualifier that casts doubt on the figures
Palestinians, civilians, or the group the source names "Terrorists" or "human shields" for Palestinians in general
Forced displacement "Evacuations" for people driven from their homes
Areas Israel designated "humanitarian zones" Humanitarian or "safe" zones, without the quotation marks
Children "Minors" or "young men" where the source says children
The separation wall "Security fence", "security barrier"
Raids; settler attacks "Clashes" where a source records a raid or an attack
The occupied West Bank and East Jerusalem "Judea and Samaria", "disputed territories"
Settlements, illegal under international law "Neighbourhoods", "communities"
Checkpoints "Crossings"
Killed (by Israeli forces, where the source says so) "Died" or "lost their lives" where a source says killed
The Israeli state, military and government Jews or Jewish people, when you mean the state

Hashtags
