Zanzottera builds engines in Italy for drones made by its Israeli owner, Aeronautics. Aeronautics' chief executive said in 2021 that its Z101 engine powers the Orbiter 4, which the Israeli military began flying over Gaza in November 2023. Any arms exports from it to Israel need authorisation from Italy's arms authorisation unit, which stopped granting new ones for Israel after 7 October 2023 but reviewed older licences case by case and let some run. On 16 September 2025 the UN Commission of Inquiry concluded that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza.
A small private company: about EUR 5.4 million of revenue and 12 employees in its latest reported year, on figures published by the business-data service Atoka. Its profits belong to its single shareholder, Aeronautics, and through it to Rafael, which the Israeli state owns. For a company this size, one lost integrator or one blocked export route shows in the accounts.
The company's website calls it a small company serving 'a global customer base' and records a single shareholder without naming it. In 2019 the autopilot maker UAV Navigation announced that its autopilots now control Zanzottera engines, offered to drone manufacturers as one package. Every Zanzottera engine a drone builder fits comes from a subsidiary of an Israeli state arms group.
Aeronautics' chief executive called Zanzottera 'a small company but very important one' in 2021. The Orbiter 4, the Orbiter 5 and the Aerostar each run on an engine from its factory, on Aeronautics' account and trade press records. Rafael's board was discussing an offer for Aeronautics from the American company Ondas in February 2026, Calcalist reported; Rafael said no sale had come before the board and there were no negotiations. A sale would carry Zanzottera with it.

Zanzottera Technologies builds small piston engines for drones at Grandola ed Uniti, in the province of Como, and belongs to Aeronautics, an Israeli drone maker owned by Israel's state weapons manufacturer Rafael. Aeronautics' chief executive said in 2021 that Zanzottera's Z101 engine powers the Orbiter 4. The Israeli military calls that drone Nitzoz, and began flying it over Gaza on 8 November 2023 to gather intelligence and support strike missions (sources). The UN Commission of Inquiry concluded in September 2025 that Israel has committed genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. In May 2018 the army used Aeronautics drones against unarmed Palestinian protesters at the Great March of Return, Who Profits documented. The factory is in Italy, and that is the lever: Italy's arms export authority, its parliament and the company's other customers can all reach it there.
Key Leverage Points
- Ask Italy's arms export authority what has left Grandola for Aeronautics since October 2023. Under Law 185/1990, arms exports are authorised by UAMA, a unit of the Foreign Ministry. It stopped granting new authorisations for Israel after 7 October 2023, but reviewed older licences case by case and let some run. Write to UAMA, and to members of the foreign affairs and defence committees of the Italian parliament. Ask whether any authorisation, military or dual-use, covers engines sent to Aeronautics, and whether any was used after that date.
- Send this page to the Palestinian organisations tracing Italian military shipments to Israel. Giovani Palestinesi d'Italia and the Palestinian Youth Movement, with partners, published at least 416 military-related shipments from Italy to Israel in March 2026, traced through shipping records, and call on workers across Italy to stop military components leaving for Israel. Tell them its owner's chief executive said in 2021 that its engine powers the Orbiter 4, which the Israeli military began flying over Gaza in November 2023. Send them anything you know about how engines travel from Grandola to Aeronautics.
- Ask drone builders that fit Zanzottera engines to review the supplier. The company says it serves "a global customer base", and its website names no shareholder. The autopilot maker UAV Navigation announced in 2019 that its autopilots now control Zanzottera engines, offered to drone manufacturers as one package. Write to UAV Navigation and to any integrator you can identify. Ask them to test a supplier owned by Rafael against their own human rights policy.
- Ask Ondas whether an offer for Aeronautics would take in the Italian factory. Rafael's board was discussing an offer for Aeronautics from the American company Ondas in February 2026, Calcalist reported; Rafael said there were no negotiations. A sale of Aeronautics would carry its subsidiaries with it, Zanzottera among them. Ask Ondas's investor relations team whether it intends to buy the engine maker, and its shareholders whether they want it.
Evidence Summary
Zanzottera began in 1996 and since 2000 has made engines only for unmanned aircraft, from about 10 to 82 horsepower. Its website records a single shareholder. Aeronautics' chief executive Moshe Elazar told EDR Magazine in March 2021: "we own Zanzottera in Italy". Zanzottera SRL appears as a wholly owned subsidiary in the Aeronautics profile kept by the Israeli research centre Who Profits. Rafael and the businessman Avihai Stolero bought Aeronautics in September 2019 for NIS 850 million. In 2023 Stolero used an option requiring Rafael to buy his half, according to Calcalist.
The engines sit inside Aeronautics' drones. Zanzottera's Z101 runs the Orbiter 4, Elazar said, with an advantage in fuel consumption. In June 2023 Aeronautics had its Italian subsidiary develop an 11-horsepower dual-ignition engine for the new Orbiter 5, shown at the Paris Air Show. The older Aerostar, whose listed operators include the Israel Defence Forces, runs on a Zanzottera 498i (timeline).
Aeronautics supplies the Orbiter 4 to the Israeli Air Force and the Intelligence Directorate under a programme called Storm Clouds, according to Calcalist in February 2026. Nitzoz drones began flying over Gaza on 8 November 2023 with the chief of staff's approval, according to Walla News the next day. In Walla's account, the drones supported detect-and-strike missions. A drone based on the Orbiter was in use in Gaza that week, according to Breaking Defense. AFSC Investigate dates the Orbiter 4's first operational use in Gaza to the same day.
Aeronautics drones were turned on Palestinians before. The Israeli military used them against unarmed protesters at the Great March of Return in Gaza in May 2018, as documented by Who Profits. It also leased the company's Pegasus 120 and fitted it with tear gas and skunk water. A supply relationship between Zanzottera and Aeronautics was reported to this site in 2026.
Engagement Strategy
Each audience reaches the factory by a different route.
- Italian authorities and parliamentarians. Ask UAMA and the foreign affairs and defence committees which authorisation covers engines sent to Aeronautics, and whether any shipments were made after 7 October 2023.
- Palestinian and solidarity organisations in Italy. Add Zanzottera to the shipment tracing by Giovani Palestinesi d'Italia and the Palestinian Youth Movement, and to organising in the province of Como.
- Drone builders and partners. Ask integrators fitting Zanzottera engines, and UAV Navigation, to review the supplier against their own human rights policies.
- Freight and logistics workers. Workers in Lombardy who know where the company's shipments go can report it securely through this site, or through their union and Weapon Watch.
- Investors in Ondas. Ask whether any purchase of Aeronautics would include the engine factory in Grandola.
